What Happens Inside the FREE Intro Class

Step 1: Arrive, Meet the Coaches, and Get Comfortable

We'll just say hi and show you where the dressing room is.

We'll also tell you, " No shoes on the mat, no bare feet outside the mat," but there's a 50% chance you'll forget that immediately.

Step 2: Learn the 4-step system of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in about 2 minutes

If you watch jiu-jitsu or MMA on YouTube or Instagram, it often seems very complex. But it's actually a simple 4-step system:

  1. Get to the ground
  2. Get past the dangerous legs
  3. Pin your partner
  4. Submit them with a choke or joint-lock.

Step 3: Play simple training games to learn fundamental BJJ skills

We'll play about 6 games of 5 minutes with a resisting partner. These games are designed to teach you basic skills.

Working with someone who's resisting is a lot more fun; it's also the only way to know if you're doing things correctly.

We'll be working from very safe positions under the watchful eye of an experienced coach.

Step 4: Questions and answers

" Ask any question you might have about the class, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or whatever you might be curious about.

You can also ask me questions about the 2002 board game "Puerto Rico." It would be weird if you did, but I have a 12-game win streak in my family.

Q and A

Step 5: Find out the easiest way to get started with BJJ

If you liked the class, and want to continue, there's a chance to sign up at the end of the class. No pressure, though.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this for women too, or only men?

The class is open to everyone. We almost always have women on the mats, and coaches make sure you're paired with appropriate training partners.

What happens after the intro if I like it?

You'll have the option to join the 4-Week Beginner Bootcamp, a structured program to take you from zero to confidently training with the rest of the gym.

Do I need any experience to join?

Not at all. This class is designed specifically for complete beginners. You'll learn everything step by step in a safe, welcoming environment.

Am I too out of shape or too old to start?

Most of our members started in their 30s, 40s, or even later. The class is paced for everyone, no prior fitness or martial arts experience required.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?

Yes. The intro class is structured with beginner safety in mind. The games we'll play are from very safe positions under the watchful eye of an experienced coach. Most people train several times a week for years without getting injured.

What should I bring?

Just T-shirts, some shorts, and a water bottle. Slippers and a towel can be handy too.

Do I have to sign up for a membership afterward?

No. Zero obligation. The intro class exists purely for you to experience BJJ and decide if you enjoy it.

Will I be thrown into intense sparring on day one?

Not at all. But you will play some games with a resisting partner from safe positions. Most newcomers find this the most fun part of the whole class.

What if I don't know anyone there?

Most people walk in alone, that's completely normal. The group is full of other beginners, and we make sure you're introduced and partnered up immediately. Nobody stands around awkwardly. Of course you're free to bring a friend as well.

What if I have old injuries? Back, knee, shoulder?

Let the coach know when you arrive or through WhatsApp after registering. We adapt training as needed, you always train at your own pace and skip anything that doesn't feel right.

How long is the intro class?

Plan for about 60 minutes, roughly six short training rounds of ~5 minutes each, with brief explanations in between, finishing with a Q&A.

Do I need a gi or mouthguard?

No. For the intro class, regular sports clothes are all you need. If you decide to continue, we'll tell you exactly what gear makes sense to get next and in what order.
